Born in New Jersey, Samuel Wilbur Condit made his way at an early age to California where during the lush gold years he was a successful miner and a lavish spender. From California he went to washington territory where he became a packer carrying goods from Walla Walla to the mining camps. In 1875 he settled on a ranch where the town of Wilburr stands today and raised cattle and horses. He was said to have three sons by his Indian wives. He was killed in a shootout over a woman he wanted to marry not far from Wilbur, Washington.43
