Notes for Silas (Spouse 1)
He graduated from Princeton College in 1795, and for a short time engaged in mercantile life at Orange, but soon afterwards moved to Newark, where he spent a long and useful life. He was a Representative in Congress from 1831 to 1833, a member of the State Constitutional Convention in 1844, and also served as a member of the New Jersey Legislature. He was ever active and energetic in civil life, and for 22 years was president of the Newark Banking Company. He took great interest in the history of the Condit family, and but for his efforts in this direction we should, probably, have remained ignorant of the genealogy of the earlier branches. The records which he left were brief, and embraced only his descent from John; this was enough, however, to enable us to trace all the different branches, aided by the memory of others. The name of Silas Condit is remembered by many of the aged members of the family with profound regard, and few men leave behind them a name so untarnished. He, with his wife, were members of the Presbyterian church at Orange, and afterward transferred their connection to the church at Newark, where he continued to reside until his death.8
