!Birth Ancestral File, Thomas UNDERWOOD (972-1C)
Samuel and his sister Elizabeth were apparently left as orphans and lived with John Meares. On 5 Oct 1683 Samuel received two separate grants of 22 1/2 acres each from Lord Baltimore, based on assignments from Henry Hanslap. These grants, known as 'Underwood's Addition were laid out on the
north side of the Severn River near the grants to his father called 'Middle Neck' and the 'Landing'. He also obtained a grant for another fifty acres in the general area known as 'Mutual Content'. He sold the tract known as 'Middle Neck' on 14 Aug 1683. He kept the remainder of the property and probably lived upon it until his death.
On 14 Mar 1722 he purchased 250 acres in London Grove, PA located on the township's lower west boundary. Samuel never lived there, leaving 150 acres to his son Benjamin, and 50 Acres each to sons Alexander and Thomas. His sons sold the land 27 May 1730. Alexander also owned another 159 acres just north of there.
Some records show Samuel dying in 1746. As his will was written 11 Jun 1722, he probably died closer to that date, or at least before 1730 when his sons sold the land in London Grove.Reference Hearalds College London has Underwoods in Western Hertfordshire England in 1634,
2. Samuel2 Underwood (Thomas1)(3) (#1527) was born in Ann Arundel, MD province ca 1656. Samuel died aft. Nov. 6, 1722 at approximately 66 years of age. His body was interred circa 1722.
He married Mary Ann Wilcox abt 1685. (Mary Ann Wilcox is #3212.) Mary was born CA 1670 in New Castle Co., Delaware, USA. Mary(4) was the daughter of Henry Wilcocks and Sarah Lewis. Mary died AFT 1722.
He made a will 11 JUN 1722 in New Castle Co., Delaware, USA. Samuel's will was probated 18 Feb 1722/3 in Wilmington, New Castle, Delaware, USA. Samuel Underwood owned 22 1/2 acres by Sept. 29, 1682. He sold 50 acres of land, known as "Middle Neck" originally belonging to his father, Thomas Underwood on Mar. 24, 1683 to his brother-in-law. He purchased land from Samuel Matson six years later. He and wife, Mary, sold 300 acres to Nicholas Rogers in 1689. He had land surveyed and patented to him from John Grigg on the 12th mo 18 1692-3, that he had apparently owned since 1685. (C-636) This might have been in preparation for a move as he and his family left for New Castle, Delaware about 1693 onto 150 acres. He is on record as paying taxes in that year in New Castle. He bought 250
acres of land in what is now London Grove, Pennsylvania on March 14, 1722. This was land he never moved to, but willed to his sons. His will, made in 1722, is on file in Wilmington, Delaware.
This Samuel's wife Mary was probably Mary Ann Wilcox as in CD-102. 1816
