Notes for Walter Dodd Condit
He was a painter, teacher and commercial artist, he worked in watercolor, oil painting and wood cut media. Inspirations for his work were local, especially the Manayunk section of Philadelphia, with occasional glimpses of Maine where he summered. He graduated from the Haverford School and went on to further his art studies at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, then received his BFA from the University of Pennsylvania, and his MFA from the Barnes Foundation. He had numerous one man shows, including two at the Phillips Gallery, as well as group shows at the Philadelphia Sketch Club, the Woodmere Art Gallery, the Greater Norristown Art League, and the Manayunk Art Alliance. In 1940, He was awarded the PAFA Cresson Traveling Scholarship, a prize which permitted him the opportunity to study abroad, and another prize in 1941.  He was awarded the Philadelphia Watercolor Prize for his painting “One Among Many” at the 62nd annual Philadelphia Water Color Club’s member exhibition. For many years Walter Condit served on the faculties of the Woodmere Art Museum in Chestnut Hill and the Hussian School of Art in Center City, Philadelphia. He also taught at The Greater Norristown Art League, Conshohocken Art League, The Manayunk Art Center, and The King of Prussia Art Center. He was also a member of the Philadelphia Art Alliance.43
