43Dr. Condit was an eminent physician of Morris County, having graduated from the University of Pennsylvania. He was sheriff of Morris County in 1800, and was one of the corporators of the Morris and Essex Railroad. He served as president of the company until its extension beyond Morristown, when he was succeeded by William Wright, of Newark. He was one of the commissioners of the Trenton Asylum, and an original member of the American Colonization Society. He served also as a commissioner to fix the State boundary line between New York and New Jersey; was a member of the State Legislature from 1805 until 1810--the last two years being speaker of the House. He also represented his district in Congress from 1811 to 1833, except two terms, and in 1837 and 1838 was again elected a member of the Legislature. During these two years he was also speaker of the House. Dr. Condit was a prominent member of the State Medical Society, and was considered one of the best Latin scholars of that day. He was also an extensive reader of English and French literature, and conducted quite a large correspondence with Everett, Clay, Calhoun and Chittenden in relation to the affairs of the general government. He served as a trustee of Princeton College forty years.
