I am a descendent of Eliza Whitehead from Ohio, who was Rebecca Condit's granddaughter (if I am reading everything correctly).  She married Jasper N Patterson and moved to Carterville Missouri, and is I believe the only one of the Whitehead children that left Licking County in that generation from that family.  She is buried in the Carterville Cemetery along with practically every other descendent of that side of the family.

Her daughter married my great-grandfather Alfred Jasper Williams, and my grandfather was the Reverend Paul Roland Williams.  My mother is Reverend Paul's oldest daughter, Ruth Ann Reynolds, and I am her oldest son.  I have two boys of my own, William Emerson and Thomas Roland.

We have only been "geneologically" minded for about a month now, and we have had a terrific time looking through your records.  We live apart from most of our immediate family, which remains largely in the Joplin, Missouri area.  Your work has made us all feel like we are a part of something bigger.
Sincerely yours,
David Reynolds, D.M.A.

Jasper N (we believe Newton) Patterson and Eliza moved from Jersey Township Ohio ( I have visited the cemetery there) to the mining district of Carterville.  He was listed in his last census in Ohio as a “huckster”.  Perhaps he thought he would do a better job of that kind of work in a mining town than in a town known for their making buggies.  Always wondered about Eliza – she is the only sibling to have moved away and not buried in Jersey Township Cemetery, and there are a lot of them!

On Find a Grave, you will also find a Jasper Allen Patterson in that Carterville plot who was a son of Jasper N and Eliza that died as a young adult from an injury while building Route 66 – no marriage or children.

Eva (Patterson) Williams (married to John Williams) was a daughter of Jasper and Eliza as well.  Both are buried next plot over.  She remarried late in life to a Howard after John’s death.

They had Alfred Jasper Williams (who married Anna (originally Gunther)) then married Edith Williams, Anna’s sister – who is buried in Gunther I lot.  Family lore states that Edith was teaching in a mining town in Colorado, but decided it was her responsibility to raise her sister’s children after Anna died unexpectedly.

Alfred and Anna had Paul Roland, Ruth Elizabeth (Green) (both buried in the same plot) and Raymond, who is buried in California – wife was Lola Anna.

Paul Roland was my grandfather.  He married Opal Boyd, they had Ruth Ann Reynolds (my mother, now buried on what we call the Gunther II plot), James Alfred (buried on Williams plot) and Paula Sue McClure (married to John) – both still living in a Nashville suburb.
Ruth Ann is my mother.  What a tangled web.
Thanks for checking in!  I hope you are staying safe.
Dave

I have mountains of documents that I can provide if you are interested?  I also have a large public family tree on Ancestry.  Lastly, we have used DNA information to help confirm all of our records.  I have attached a land map from Condit Township as there are connections here to many other Condit Cousins.  If you look at the center of the map, you wil; see farm of Lee Francis Putnam diagonally across from his father's farm (Luther Edgerton Putnam).
Happy Thanksgiving!
Best wishes,

What a pleasure to hear back from you so quickly.  Many thanks for your kind compliments and all the fabulous information.  I am definitely an amateur but also a history buff, so I try to be as thorough as I can be.  I got started on the family history for my daughter's 8th grade family history project and it ballooned into a big hobby!  So happy to be connected with you.
My maiden name is Ferris and I was born in Springfield, MA.  My husband Matt is the last of 3 children.  He has an older sister Frances and a middle brother Stuart.
We have a daughter Ellen Elizabeth Anderson born in 2006.
I have documented most all, i believe, of Lee Francis Putnam's descendants that are not living.  Matt's father had a brother Gerald.  He passed away recently so I will send you his obituary.  He had two sons and grandchildren as well.
I saw that you also have Phebe Condit in your records.  Her husband Henry Putnam was the brother of Luther Edgerton Putnam.  They pioneered together (with their new brides) from Jersey, OH to Champaign, IL.  Henry's farm is also visible on the map I sent you.  It is in the lower left quadrant.  His wife Phebe Condit was a cousin of Helen Sanford Whitehead.  I found a profile on Henry that I will send you in a separate email as it is on my ipad.  I thought you might find it interesting.
This summer, we took a drive down to Condit Township and visited the area.  It is spectacularly beautiful and remains quite similar to how it would have looked in 1860.  There are corn fields for as far as the eye can see, a 100 year old fairgrounds, and the farms remain nearly intact - perhaps aggregated even - rather than subdivided.  It was like stepping back in time.  We went to Willowbrook Cemetery and visited the graves of Helen Whitehead, Luther Edgerton Putnam, Lee Francis, his wife and many other Putnam relatives.  They are all buried together in a small, well-kept, peaceful and picturesque place.  I was heartened to see that Lee Francis was buried so near his mother.  She undoubtedly gave her life due to complications from the childbirth.  I imagine it must have been terribly difficult for Dr. Ezekiel Whitehead, who was for so long the town physician in Jersey, OH to send his daughter off to the undeveloped frontier and not be able to tend to her in whatever illness took her life after the birth of her son.
I do have a genealogy challenge that you might be able to help me with.  While it is not directly related to the Condit family, it centers near where you live in Virginia.  I'll e-mail you a separate note about it to keep it all in one place.  At worst, the story will be a fun read for you - it is a story of children captured by Indians, who after having been rescued are later married.  They are my husband's 3rd great grandparents who married into the Condit line when Louise Putnam married James Ralph Anderson.  I wonder if you might have some tips for me in the search for their ancestors dating back to Virginia around 1770?  The distant DNA connections all lead back to Virginia in this line, so the documentation is there somewhere!

I am searching for more information about Onesimus Weldon Whitehead, born in Licking County, Ohio, 29 December 1828.  I show his parents as Abner Whitehead, Jr., and Rebecca Condit Williams.
I don't show on your website that you have information about this family, but thought, perhaps, I wasn't accessing the information correctly.  In a book I found on the Whitehead genealogy, I did find an Onesimus W. listed, same birthdate and location, but his middle name was listed as "Wellington".
Do you have any information on him?
Jo Moeller

11/21/2011
Thank you!  I wasn't able to find him, somehow, when I was looking on Saturday.  Your information matches mine, with the exception that, in our family, he's listed as "Onesimus Weldon Whitehead".  I'll ask my sister to double-check the family Bible when I talk to her next.
I'll send over the other information I have later this week.

My mother, Margaret Ruth Mitchell, was Howard J. Mitchell's surviving daughter; his son, Howard Mitchell and older daughter (middle name = Elizabeth, can't think of her first), died in the flu epidemic of 1918.

11/22/2011
Yes, I do,  My sister has the Bible in NC, and I am in Denver, but I'll see if she would be able to make a copy of his information for you.  She read it off for me yesterday, and I realized that he's listed as "Onesimus W. Whitehead" there...I don't know where I pulled "Weldon" when I wrote down the info, so I have some checking to do there.

11/24/2011
Here's the information that I have.  Most of my information is just family history.  I've just started the process of verifying everything:
Onesimus Weldon Whitehead (as I mentioned, when my sister read me the information in the Mitchell family Bible, he is listed just as "Onesimus W. Whitehead")
B:  29 December 1828, Jersey Licking County, Ohio, USA
D: 29 July 1884, Grand Rapids, Kent county, Michigan
M:  Mary J. Davis 9/9/1851. born 1 May 1828 in Mississippi
I have seen indication elsewhere that she died in 1913, but I have not verified this date.
Children:
1) Mary Melvina Whitehead - B:  18 January 1857 in Jersey Licking County, Ohio
Mary Melvina died 9 Aug 1910 by my records, On Jones County, Mississippi, and was buried on 10 augu 1910, in Jones County, Mississippi.
2)  Byron N. Whitehead, born 30 July 1852 in Hartford, Licking County, Ohio
died: 6 August 1872.  Was married 25 December 1871.  I don't see on this family groups sheet that I have his wife's name, although I do have it recorded elsewhere (haven't found it again).  As I recall, both he and his wife died on the same day, but I don't have a reason -- accident? weather-related?  I don't know.
Mary Melvina married Joshua Henry Mitchell on 5 September 1878.
Joshua Henry Mitchell was born on 21 Aug 1852 in Franklin County. Virginia.  He died on 27 July 1927 in Hattiesburg, Forrest County, Mississippi.  In 1889, his occupation was "lumber" on w s N. forrest 1 n of Quimby in Grand Rapids, per the Grand Rapids city directory of 1889.  Parents:  James Randolph Mitchell (16 December 1820 in Franklin City, Virginia, and died 19 June 1896) and Nancy Margaret Wright (24 February 1830 - 31 May 1902).
Children:  James Howard Mitchell (my grandfather, my mother's father) - born: 31 August 1883 in Grand Rapids, Kent County Michigan.  Died: 12 January 1956.  I believe he had a heart attack.  I remember seeing him before he died (I was five); he had an oxygen tent over his head.
He was prominent in the Hattiesburg business community. owning a laundry, the Dixie Hotel, an insurance agency, a Chinese-American restaurant (part of the Dixie Hotel, I think) I don't know that he owned all of these simultantaneously).  He married Drusilla Clark on the 9 of October 1909 in Hattiesburg.  She was a skilled artist, and we have many of her paintings.
Drusilla died 16 August 1946.  I don't know the exact cause of death, but my mother said she suffered from "female trouble" and at one point in her life, had had radiation treatments.  On one occasion, she was left under the radiation too long and suffered a burn that never healed as it should.
My mother, Margeret Ruth Mitchell, was the youngest of their children, and an only child, since her brother Howard Mitchell and her sister, Mary Elizabeth Mitchell, both died in the 1918 flu epidemic, as I mentioned in my earlier email.  My mother was born on 13 November 1919 in Hattiesburg and died on 4 September 1998 in Carthage NC (heart attack/stroke complications).
My father, Carl Albert John Moeller, was born 16 Aug 1917 in Saginaw Michigan and died 1 Nov 1993 in Boone, Watauga, NC of colon cancer.  My father got his Ph.D. in education and taught industrial and technical education at NC State, Appalachian State University, and University of Southern Mississippi.  My mother taught first grade, as well as private piano lessons; she had a Masters in music performance andwas very close to completing a Masters in Psychology.  She also played in the "Boone Big Band" and had her first piano recital in Hattiesburg at age 4.  She told me that, had she been born later than 1919, she would have chosen to be a race car driver.  During World War II, she took flying lessons at the Shelbyville army base there near Hattiesburg, but for some reason, didn't finish the final solo flight.  I believe she told me that the war ended and that ended the flying lessons.
My parents were married 12 of June 1948 in Saginaw Michigan.
My older brother (1949) and my younger sister (1957) would prefer that their information not be provided.  I was born in Texas in 1951 (Marilyn Jo Moeller).
My grandfather Mitchell's brothers and sisters were:
Ralph W. Mitchell - 28 August 1879 (Tower Hill, Illinois) - 10 October 1935 (Forrest County, Mississippi)
Flossy Dell Mitchel - 11 June 1889 (Grand Rapids, Kent, Michigan) - 28 Nov 1952
Ruth Mitchell - 9 October 1895 (Jones County, Mississippi) - 24 Nov 1958
Fred Thomas Mitchell (Fred Tom) - 4 July 1891 (Clarksdale, coahoma, Mississippi) - 8 December 1953 (I believe this was in Hattiesburg.  He was President of the University of Southern Mississippi there in Hattiesburg, although I don't know if he was president when he died, or if he had retired prior to his death).  His daughter
Blanche Mitchell, born 1885.  That's all that I have for her at the moment.
All of the boys were over 6' tall, with the exception of my grandfather, who was only 5'10"  We joked about this in my family because my brother is over six foot and towers over the rest of us at 5'7" and my sister at 5'4".
I may have duplicated much of the info that you had, because I didn't cross-reference what I have to your website yet, just wanted to be sure I got this off as I promised.
