Notes for John Whittlesey
Believed to be the first person of the name who emigrated to the United States, and the ancestor of all the Whittleseys who have lived here. He came from England about 1650, and became a tanner and shoemaker at Saybrook, CT. The town of Saybrook, by authority of the General Court, gave to Mr. Whittlesey and Wm. dudley, the right to establish a ferry over Connecticut River, near which he lived in 1663. This still belongs to his descendants.2852
