He prepared for college in the parish school, in which he also taught for several years. He graduated from Princeton College in 1873; received the degree of A. M. in 1876. He took the full course in Princeton Theological Seminary and graduated in 1879. He was ordained an evangelist June 11, 1879, and went to Albany, Oregon, under commission from the Home Missionary Board. Was mathematical and classical instructor in Albany College for two years, during which time he cared for one church and two missionary stations. Was acting pastor of the Albany Presbyterian Church four years. He returned to New Jersey and entered the pastorate of the Marshall Street Church, Elizabeth, New Jersey. After four years he accepted a call to Hagerstown, Maryland, where he served several years. He returned to the Presbytery of Newton, and to the old home church in Stillwater for three years. After one year as pastor of a seaside church in Cape May County, he accepted a call to the Yellow Frame Church in Sussex County, New Jersey, near Newton, where he served more than sixteen years.
