Notes for Timothy Dwight “Pap” Condit
He learned the tanner's trade with his eldest brother at Troy, Morris County, N. J., and was afterwards engaged in that business with Captain Baldwin at Montville, N. J. His life was interspersed with financial successes and reverses, reflecting both sunlight and shadow. In 1831 he moved to Illinois, where he located at Rushville. Subsequently he settled at what is now East St. Louis, and while there he engaged in the transfer and sale of stock. In his peculiarity, he adopted the name of "Pap," and kept a tavern known as "Pap's House." Leaving there, he located at Mt. Vernon, Ill., where he remained a few years, and connected himself with the Presbyterian Church. His wife died in 1858. In 1862 he returned to New Jersey on a visit, where he died suddenly while at church, Sept., 1862.
