Notes for Whitfield Smith (Spouse 1)
His parents moved to Ohio when he was but six months of age and settled in Trenton Township, Delaware County, which was at that time an almost unbroken forest. His youth was spent in helping his father clear the land for cultivation. His education was limited to the common school, but was sufficient to enable him to meet the problems which came up in his active life as a farmer and in the offices to which he was elected by the voters of the township. He served as treasurer of Trenton Township for twenty-one consecutive years. His integrity and honesty was unquestionable and he enjoyed the confidence and respect of the people of the community in which he spent his life. As the reward of honest and faithful labor he accumulated an estate of 800 acres. He was blessed with good health, and with the help of his faithful and efficient wife enjoyed the labor and care of his farm and of his family. In early life he united with the Trenton Presbyterian Church, and later transferred his membership to the Trenton Christian Church, to which he remained a devoted member until God called him to the home prepared for His faithful servants. His sickness was of short duration. He died March 5, 1914. After nearly fifty-eight years of happy companionship, his devoted wife is left with her children and grandchildren.
