Notes for Phebe Pierson
Living in Warren Co., Iowa in July 1872 when original application was rejected. Reapplied for pension in 1878 and it was approved after a Congressional change to Act.3246
Notes for Silas D. (Spouse 1)
At the age of 18 he enlisted in the War of 1812 for six months, and received an honorable discharge, serving in Capt. Day’s Co., NJ militia. In Aug 1851 he was living in Athens Co., Ohio, having moved to Ohio in May 1838 and moved to Athens Co., Ohio in 1850 from Vinton Co., Ohio.3246
He was possessed of more than ordinary shrewdness for making money, and when he entered the army he took with him into camp a small stock of notions and established a kind of sutler's trade. Beginning with only seven dollars and renewing his stock from time to time, at the expiration of his term of service he had realized one hundred dollars. He bought a farm in Orange, where he lived until 1839, when he moved to Gallia County, Ohio. Here he located on eighty acres of heavily-timbered land which he had procured by the sale of his farm in New Jersey. On the place he erected a log house, which he occupied eleven years. Then he removed to Albany, Athens County, Ohio, for the purpose of providing his family with better educational advantages. In 1858 he removed to Jasper County, Iowa, where he purchased a farm, on which he resided until his death, which occurred Feb. 23, 1860. His numerous descendants, who are settled in that locality, inherit the temperate habits, sturdy integrity and industry which were characteristic of Silas, honored and useful members of the Condit family and worthy the name they bear.8
