Notes for Samuel Uzal Dodd
Three months after his second marriage, enlisted in the Twenty-sixth Regiment, New Jersey Volunteers, and was mustered in the service for nine months. He received a captain's commission and at once proceeded to the front, where he was actively engaged in the stirring events which characterized the War of the Rebellion. When near the expiration of his term of service, while leading his company in a boat across the Rappahannock, at Fredericksburg, to charge the enemy's rifle pits, he was wounded by a rebel sharp-shooter, which caused his death the following day. Thus passed away a true patriot, an honored citizen and a sincere Christian. His memory was honored by his comrades in the G. A. R. by giving his name to Uzal Dodd Post, No. 12, of Orange.7
