Notes for William Condit
William was born in Washington County, Pa., in 1797. Soon after his marriage he erected a sawmill near his father's and began to utilize the dense growth of pine timber then covering that locality (now known as New Vernon Township), floating the lumber in the spring of the year down Big Sandy Creek into the Allegheny River, thence to Pittsburgh, and often to Cincinnati. His home was near his father's, on a farm which he owned, and where he reared his numerous family. He united with the Fairfield Presbyterian Church in 1821, and was ordained elder of that church in 1840, serving as such until his death, which occurred suddenly, Nov. 5, 1859. Whilc riding with a neighbor in a wagon drawn by a spirited pair of oxen a pin about the yoke became loosened. When adjusting this the cattle started suddenly and threw him to the ground, the kingbolt of the wagon striking his head and killing him instantly. The accident occurred a few rods from his house. The session of the old Fairfield Church, on January 22, 1860, adopted resolutions of condolence with the family.8
