There is a Benjamin Parks buried in the Bengall Cemetery, Stanford, Dutchess Co., New York who was b. 20 Apr 1809 Stanfordville; d. 30 Jul 1848.613
In 1828, Benjamin Parks went deer hunting and overturned a rock laced with gold. His discovery led to the first major gold rush in the US and created overnight the boom town of Auraria, w/ a pop. of 10,000 by 1832.
In 1838, the US government opened one of the first Federal Branch Mints in Dahlonega, where $6 million in gold coins were minted, from the gold which he discovered. Presently, this property belongs to North Georgia Colleg. The building's spire is covered with 23 ounces of Dahlonega gold, while the Georgia State Capital has 60 ounces of Dahlonega gold on its dome --all of which was discovered by Benjamin Parks.
