On Oct. 11, 1816, he loaded his effects into a covered wagon and with his father-in-law, his wife, and two children started for the west, a 600 mile journey. He settled near Columbus, Ohio. Three years later he bought a farm in Jersey township, Licking Co., Ohio. Upon the death of his father in 1823, he was compelled to return to Mendham, Morris Co., New Jersey. Aroused by the temperance lectures in 1827, he swore off spirits and circulated on of the first temperance pledges in his community. In 1841 he moved his family, wife and nine children, to Macomb Co., Michigan. He was a Major commanding the 2nd Battalion, 1st Regiment, New Jersey Militia while in Morris Co.971
