Notes for Joanna Williams
As no mention is made in John's will about Joanna she probably died prior to it being "proved" on 10 Jun 1783.
John and Joanna's wedding was the first wedding in Orange, New Jersey.8
They had a daughter Joanna Condit, who married Samuel Williams, son of Matthew Jr.'s brother Samuel.39
Notes for John (Spouse 1)
“The hotel (Central Hotel, Orange, NJ) was built in 1739 by John Condit. It was known as John Condit’s Public House and the name continued with occasional changes in the surname through successive generations of the family until 1821.” His will names Matthew, Ruth, Jemima, and Mary, known living children, Elizabeth having died prior to John writing his will in 1780.8
His marriage is said to be the first marriage solemnized within the present limits of the Oranges. Early in life he acquired property in what is now the central part of the city of Orange on the south side of Main street, extending west from Centre street. He built the Orange Hotel, probably in 1739, as a license was granted to him that year by the court to keep a public house. This hotel was known then, and for many years thereafter, as the "Condit House," and continued under the management and ownership of different members of the family for nearly ninety years. John's will, on file in Trenton, N. J., was dated Sept. 14, 1780, and in it he named his children Matthew, Ruth, Jemima and Mary. His son Matthew and Jonathan Condit were named as executors, and the witnesses were Nathaniel Condit, Zebulon Jones and Joannah Mackensey. As no mention is made in the will of his wife Joanna, she probably died before its execution. The will was proved June 10, 1783, which is the only record we have been able to find denoting the probable date of his death.8
He was sent to England in 1750 by his neighbors to seek an audience with the King or his Council, to present their claims to land over the Newark Mountains that were contested by the Proprietors of East Jersey.617
Will extract:
1780, Sept. 14. Condlct, John, of Newark, Essex Co.; will of. Son, Matthew, all lands, except 10 acres adjoining Abraham Ogden, which was given to me by will, that I gave to my 3 daughters, Ruth, Jemima and Mary. Daughter, Mary, a chest of drawers. Executors—son, Matthew and Jonathan Condict. Witnesses—Nathaniel Condict, Zebulon Jones, Joannah Mackinsey. Proved June 10, 1783. Lib. M, p. 150.839
On the list of Freeholders, Newark Township on 1 Sep 1755.623
There is a deed filed in Book B, page 167 Essex County deeds from John Cundit dated 12 Apr 1717 but filed 15 July 1737. John would only have been 16 when he originally signed the deed which seems young.854
